OK, this is a tough one. You can go basic and classic--garnish with either green olives or a lemon twist. There are so many ways to make this cocktail depending on what your taste is. This recipe is the basic, classic one.
First, put a martini glass in the freezer. If you want to make a proper martini, the glass should be frozen. Next, fill a shaker with crushed ice. If you don't have crushed, use whatever you have. Add the booze and shake it like mad, for about 10 seconds. You can make it "dirty" by adding a splash of olive juice (who doesn't like it dirty?!). Add the dirty juice BEFORE you shake it though.
Take the frozen glass out of the freezer and put a splash of dry vermouth in it. Swish it around to coat the glass and discard it. If you like it really dry don't use any vermouth at all. Again, cater to the taste you desire. Now it is time for the garnish. Use a lemon twist if you like it with a twist. If you like olives, place an olive, or two, or three (on a spike or toothpick, if you like) in the glass. Now, strain the booze into the glass. Add a nice touch by shaking the shaker when straining so a few ice chips are left in the glass. Serve it up, darling!!
